Senator George V. Voinovich of Ohio has stated that he will retire when his term expires in 2010. Voinovich is one of Ohio’s most experienced politicians, previously being Mayor of Cleveland, Lt. Governor, and Governor. Voinovich may not be missed by all Republicans; he had a McCainesque ability to get under conservatives skin.
This opens up a wide field in Ohio. Republicans have numerous strong candidates, including former Sen. Mike Dewine (who lost to Sherrod Brown in 2006), former Rep. Rob Portman, and former Rep. Jon Kasich; although each of these candidates may vy for one of three positions opening up in 2010 in Ohio: Governor, Senator, and Attorney General. The Democrats don’t have any sure fire candidates at this time, although several Congressman are looking into possible Senate runs.
