Obama’s first misstep? December 6, 2008

Rumors are rampant that Mr. Obama will select California Rep. Xavier Becerra, a Democrat, to the post of U.S. trade representative.

If true, this would be Mr. Obama first real mistake as President-elect.

Mr. Becerra is virtually against every free trade agreement imaginable, from NAFTA to CAFTA and beyond.  Trade representative is a position where it is vital for the director to BELIEVE IN FREE TRADE.  If Mr. Obama wants to change trade policy, that is his perrogative, but that would be better done within Congress.  The post of trade representative is actually a vital and sensitive one.  And Mr. Becerra has not shown any interest in free trade.

On a side note, Mr. Becerra’s ethics are in question, after he convinced the Clinton administration to pardon a convicted cocaine dealer who was spending time in federal prison at the time.

I hope Mr. Obama reconsiders this pick.  This is one that would actually hurt the economic status of the United States.
