Unless the Illinois governor comes to his senses (not likely, considering his past actions), this mess could continue for some time.

The Illinois Clerk of Elections yesterday stated that there is no money for a special election to replace Barack Obama in the Senate.  There may be some options, but as of now, the power of the replacement like with Rod Blagojevich.  The estimates of the cost of such an election is around $50 million, which is a big lump sum in these bad economic times.  And impeachment, the next most likely option, will take months.

Compounding matters?  Cook County clerk David Orr noted suburban Cook County could have up to three special elections, each with a primary and a general, at a cost of more than $12 million: one to replace Rep. Rahm Emanuel, D-Chicago, who must resign his seat to become Obama’ chief of staff; another to fill Obama’s vacant Senate seat; and yet another if a seated Congressman from Cook County is appointed or elected to the U.S. Senate.

Then, to make matters even worse, the Obama team is delaying releasing their full findings for another week, extending this mini-crisis to almost one month.  They state that they were asked by the prosecutors to wait for more time. In a written statement released by his office late Monday, U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald confirmed that he asked for the delay, saying he wanted more time to conduct interviews.

But lawyers knowledgeable about such cases say Mr. Fitzgerald has no authority to compel the president-elect to stay silent on a matter that has clouded his transition and interfered with his policy messages.  “There is absolutely no legal impediment or injunction that Fitzgerald could put on them,” said Stanley M. Brand, a Democratic lawyer with experience in such scandals. “They’ve decided not to talk.”

Thus, for one reason or another, the Obamaites have decided that delaying full disclosure is beneficial to them.  Only they and God know why.  It would be better for them to release quickly, and distance themselves from this buffoon.
