In the past few weeks, Barack Obama has come close to finalizing selections for cabinet posts.

Today, he ready to announce former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack as Secretary of Agriculture, and Senator Ken Salazar of Colorado as Secretary of the Interior.

Nobel laureate Stephen Chu was named Secretary of Energy.  Chu, who currently is director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California, has in recent years campaigned to bring together a cross-section of scientific disciplines to find ways to counter climate change.

In his seven years as CEO of Chicago Public Schools, future Secretary of Education Arne Duncan has taken on a host of urban education policy challenges to varying degrees of success.

Rounding out the selections include General Eric Shinseki for Veterans Affairs, Janet Napolitano for Homeland Security, and Lisa Jackson to head the EPA.

Overall, a very moderate group.  Some selections are gambles.  Chu is brilliant, but will he be able to pull the Energy Department’s ridiculous beaurocracy together?  Duncan had very mixed results in Chicago.  But overall, very few complaints can be made about these cabinet selections.  Labor and Transportation remain, and very likely the latter will go to a Republican.
