Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said that 20-30,000 troops could be added to the force in Afghanistan next year.  Preliminary steps are already being taken, such as moving additional helicopter fleets to the area so they can transport the additional troops.

Mr. Obama suggested adding to the numbers of troops there during the campaign, but this is a much larger force than he ever suggested.  During the campaign, Obama’s campaign suggested about 2 brigades, or around 10,000 troops.  This is obviously multiple times larger.

Additionally, the additional forces will cost money…an estimate $1-2 billion per month, that now needs to be somehow funded.

Robert Gates, the current and future Secretary of Defense, signed off on this process.   One would assume that the moves have been communicated to the President-elect as well.  So the country has to get ready for the next military surge.
