The slow erosion of 'Minnesota Nice'...

It appears that the Minnesota Election panel will today declare Al Franken the winner of the recount for the Minnesota Senate seat.  This will be countered by numerous lawsuits pending by the Norm Coleman forces.+

However, this has been one of the more ridiculous recounts in recent history, and is coming close to challenging Florida 2000 in stupidity.

It appears that some votes that were supposed to be duplicates were counted twice.  Other votes that disappeared between election night and the recount were counted, while others that suddenly appeared during the interim were also counted (both, surprisingly, in Franken’s favor).  Additionally, the Democratic Secretary of State (who has been clearly biased from day 1), counted absentee ballots this weekend, without allowing some Republican leaning counties to even complete their review of absentee ballots.

Then, to compound the stupidity, MN Senator Amy Klobuchar and NY Senator Chuck Shumer have stated that Franken should be seated in the senate, despite the fact that this contradicts Minnesota law, which says the state cannot award a certificate of election if one party contests the results.

As a former Minnesotan, this embarrassing and sad.  For a state that has prided itself on being independent, honest, and corruption-free, this may have tainted the state forever.  Honestly, I have no idea who won in Minnesota.  But there should be a clear standard when recounting votes, and the standard should be held to at all costs.  The gross inconsistencies in the voting recount  does not give a single Minnesota voter any trust in the system.
