Blajo Outmaneuvers Reid, Pelosi, and Obama January 7, 2009

Democrats stonewalling of Roland Burris as Illinois’s replacement Senator crumbled on Wednesday, led by Sen. Dianne Feinstein.  Sen. Harry Reid, the majority leader, had said only on Sunday that the Senate would absolutely refuse to seat him and had the power to do so, which was ludicrous.

Senior Democrats now admit that Blago called their bluff.  They were steadfast against the appointment to prevent tainting themselves with corruption charges.  However, they never had much legal standing as long as the Governor was still in charge in Springfield.   Reid and Pelosi’s bluff failed, because Blagojevich knew the law was on his side.  He totally outmaneuvered them, picking a well respected African American who really wanted the job, enough that he was willing to fight for it.

So the great Democrat majority in the senate at some point will have a member that is filling a seat that could have potentially been bought for a cool million dollars.  Wonder if Al Franken thinks that would have been easier.
