There have been rumblings over the past few weeks that Obama might delay closing the Guantanamo Bay prison.  Today, several aides to Obama went on record and said that they are considering signing a presidential order closing Gitmo in the first week of his presidency.

This would go against all other statements made by Obama and others regarding Gitmo.  This includes statements made as recently as yesterday on This Week with George Stephanopoulos, which I wrote about recently.

I think more likely than not, my initial impressions will hold, and that Gitmo will stay open in the short run.  The practical reality is if Gitmo was shut next week, the prisoners would be filing lawsuits and appeals daily.  And the Obama administration is not ready for the torrent of cases coming down the river.  They would be flooded with these demands in the first 100 days, and it would be a major distraction from other policy initiatives.  More likely, this was leaked today to placate the far left, atleast for the time being.  Additionally, I trust words coming out of Mr. Obama’s mouth directly much more than two unnamed sources.
