A New Declaration of Independence? January 17, 2009

Barack Obama, setting forth on his train journey from Philadelphia to Washington, today urged Americans to adopt a ‘new delcaration of independence.’

“An economy that is faltering. Two wars, one that needs to be ended responsibly, one that needs to be waged wisely. A planet that is warming from our unsustainable dependence on oil.  And yet while our problems may be new, what is required to overcome them is not,” he said. “What is required is the same perseverance and idealism that our founders displayed.”

I think Mr. Obama forgets something.  The Decalaration of Independence decried control from a far away central government; at the time, King George III.  With our federal government daily imposing more restrictions, more regulations, and likely more taxes, I am not exactly sure who he would like us to declare independence from.

When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

I completely understand what he’s saying. Our founding fathers set forth to declare our independence from Britain, a place at the time ruled us by means of things that we depended on. Now we must declare our independence again but not from a country, but from ourselves. Our dependence on fossil fuels & things that are a danger to are people, are country, & most importantly are world. I fully agree with my President as would the past ones.
