Even being President Obama's buddy isn't enough, is it?

Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg pulled out as a candidate to replace Hillary Clinton as Senator from New York.  I have to admit, I didn’t see this coming.

In what was a bumbled withdrawal, Kennedy’s team first announced the withdrawal, then denied it, then again restated their intent to pull out .  To complicate matters, Ms. Schlossberg stated that it her reason for withdrawing was ‘personal ‘, and claimed that her uncle Sen. Ted Kennedy’s illness was part of the decision making process.

First, this irritated Sen. Kennedy’s people, who thought it made their Senator look like an invalid.

Second, it looks like there was nothing ‘personal’ about the reasons for pulling out.

It appears that problems paying taxes and household help (can you say Geitner?) all of a sudden popped up.  To complicate matters, a person close to the Governor David Paterson of New York said Mr. Paterson “never had any intention of picking Kennedy” because he had come to consider her unready for the job.  “The fiasco of the last 24 hours reinforced why the governor never intended to choose her,” the person said. Of course, this was days after numerous leaks from the Governor’s office basically affirming the certainty that Caroline Kennedy was the next U.S. Senator.  One source (appearing to try to prop up the Governor) stated that Kennedy never had any chance of being picked; this seems an absolutely ludicrous statement to me.

This whole debacle makes the Kennedy family and the New York Democratic establishment look bad.  All major figures are pointing fingers at each other, when they have no one to blame but themselves.  This is what you get when a candidate is not vetted properly, and picked for only his/her name.  The truth is that Ms. Schlossberg was enamoured with the attention, but never really wanted the job.  She looked like a someone who was being forced into taking over the family business against her consent.

The leading candidate now for the seat is blowhard Andrew Cuomo, son of the former Governor.  Personally, I say nominate Eliot Spitzer.  Atleast that would give us something to talk about.
