This is why Obama is going to be so hard to fight against… January 27, 2009

So you wonder why Obama is so smooth politically?  You see an example today.  Obama met with Congressional Republicans, in the company of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, a former moderate GOP House member from the president’s home state of Illinois, looking for more bipartisan support for the stimulus plan.  Republicans have been in a furor over some of the pork barrel projects in the stimulus plan.

So what does Obama do?  The first thing he dose is throw Nancy Pelosi overboard.  How?  Pelosi, as late as yesterday, was defending a $300 million provision in the plan for contraceptive spending.  And she defended it as stimulus. So what does Obama do?  He goes to the Republicans, and says he will get rid of it.  Second, Obama is standing steadfast on tax cuts; Democrats have started pushing back, trying to reduce the size of the tax reductions.  Obama feels that it is necessary.  Of course, his tax cuts are no where in the range Republicans would like them to be.

Questions still remain how much of the funds are really going to be immediate stimulus.  The CBO estimates that roughly 64 percent of the $825 billion package would be put to use in 2009 and 2010, assuming a stimulus bill is signed into law in mid-February.  By contrast, Peter Orszag, Obama’s budget director, vowed to congressional leaders last week that 75 percent of the money would be spent within 18 months.

Obama would be much easier to oppose if he was a violent idealogue.  I think he is certainly a liberal, but he is showing that no one is safe when he has a goal in mind.  Not even a former supporter like Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.

UPDATE:  Apparently I spoke too soon.  Instead of $300 million for contraception, now there is $325 million for STD prevention; basically, they renamed the thing.  Still don’t know how this stimulates the economy.

I don’t think Washington has seen anyone like Obama before. It seems to me that he will do what it takes to get the job done. That’s the kind of leadership we need, and have needed for years. Why is everyone so shocked that we actually have a President who is willing to swallow his pride, put politics aside, and get some things accomplished for the Greater Good of the American public? Could it be none of us have seen it for a while?

You have a short memory. Remember Ronald Reagan? Now, with the coloring of history, we think of him as an extreme idealogue. He was not that. He believed in smaller government and tax cuts, but increased taxes his first term because it was necessary. He worked with Democrats to get the largest tax cut in history, and to increase defense spending. He worked closely with Tip O’Neill to get things done.

Mr. Obama looks like a joke so far, this is what happens when you elect a community organizer.
