Michael Steele, former Lt. Governor of Maryland, today was elected as the first African American leader of the Republican National Committee.  After what had started to be a contentious race for the position, Steele finally won the backing of the majority of the conservative leadership, and quickly gaining support of other candidates, like Ken Blackwell of Ohio.

“This is our opportunity. I cannot do this by myself,” he told the crowd at the annual RNC meeting Friday. “God bless you, and God bless our party. … It’s going to be a new day.”

Steele, although not my pick, will bring change to the RNC.  He is a new face, an eloquent debater, and instantly becomes the face of the honored opposition in this country.  The Senate and Congressional Republican leadership has not show the ability to spar against the Democrats on a national scale.  It will now be Mr. Steele’s job to do exactly that, and give a face to the Republican Party.
